Objectives

FAST Danube 2 is a cross-border project involving Romania and Bulgaria. The FAST DANUBE Project aims the improvement of the navigation conditions on the Romanian – Bulgarian common sector of the Danube, from km 845 to km 375, by ensuring the fairway parameters over a minimum period of 340 days/year. The Project is fully compliant with the Regulation (EU) No 1315/2013 (TEN-T Regulation). Regulation and with the Call Document, contributing to the assurance of reliable and safe conditions on a critical sector of the Corridor. 

This project specifically targets the common RO-BG sector of the Danube, a critical stretch of the Rhine-Danube Corridor. 

The goal is to address navigational challenges and bottlenecks. These issues have led to disruptions in navigation and financial losses for the transport sector due to inadequate navigation conditions, especially during low water level periods. Therefore, the core objectives of the project include enhancing navigation conditions, eliminating navigational blockages, ensuring year-round navigability, and boosting connectivity between TEN-T network points. 

The project aligns with the EU's strategies for achieving zero-emission, mobility and increasing the use of sustainable transport modes on the Rhine-Danube Core Corridor. 

The project is implemented through the following WPs. 

  • WP1: Project Management, Communication and Dissemination;

  • WP2 - Design of Works;

  • WP3 - Execution of Works;

  • WP4 - Supervision and management of works;

  • WP5 - Environmental monitoring

The Danube sector envisage by the Project is part of the Rhine – Danube Corridor.

Activities

The Project includes the following works for improvement of the fairway condition:

  • Dredging works in 12 critical locations (110 km in total)

  • Bank stabilization in 3 locations (5.45 km in total)

  • Groynes for limiting the movement of sediments, in 3 critical locations (Belene, Bechet, Popina – 2.6 km in total);

  • Chevrons to modify the hydraulic flow and sediment response of the river, in 3 critical locations (Belene, Bechet, Popina – 1.9 km);

  • Islands to modify the hydraulic flow and sediment response of the river along the envisaged sector (1.2 million cubic meters). 

Benefits

The improved condition of the fairway is expected to increase the attractiveness of the waterborne transport, with positive effects from climate change and sustainable development perspectives. 

Besides the interest of the two Danube countries which submit this Application, the Project is expected to multiply the benefits at corridor level and to bring advantages for all the riparian States and for the EU.
